Predictions are a guide. Course, weather and training all change real results, and the further you extrapolate, the more optimistic the prediction tends to be.

How it's calculated
Pace = time ÷ distance · race predictions use the Riegel formula T2 = T1 × (D2 ÷ D1)^1.06
- Pace = time ÷ distance; speed (mph) = 3,600 ÷ pace in seconds per mile; 1 mile = 1.609344 km
- 400 m lap = pace per km × 0.4 (lane 1); one 400 m lap is about a quarter mile
- Race predictions: Riegel formula T2 = T1 × (D2 ÷ D1)^1.06 (Peter Riegel, Runner's World 1977; American Scientist 1981). It was fitted to efforts of about 3.5 to 230 minutes, so predictions outside that range are less reliable
- Check: half marathon in 2:00:00 → 9:09 per mile (5:41 per km), 6.55 mph; predicted marathon 2:00:00 × 2^1.06 ≈ 4:10:12
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my running pace?
Divide your time by your distance. For example, a half marathon (13.1 miles) in 2:00:00 is 120 minutes ÷ 13.11 miles = about 9:09 per mile. Enter your distance and finish time above and the calculator does it for you, in minutes per mile or per kilometer.
What is a good 5K time?
It depends on age, sex and experience. Many recreational runners finish a 5K somewhere between 25 and 40 minutes; a 30-minute 5K is a pace of about 9:39 per mile. Use the pace chart above to see what finish time each pace gives you.
How accurate is the race time predictor?
It uses the Riegel formula, T2 = T1 × (D2 ÷ D1)^1.06, which works best for efforts between about 3.5 minutes and 4 hours. Predicting a marathon from a 5K or 10K is often too optimistic unless you have done the long-run training, so a recent half marathon is the better input for a marathon prediction.
What pace do I need for a 4-hour marathon?
About 9:09 per mile (5:41 per kilometer), held evenly for 26.2 miles. Switch to "Finish time" above, pick Marathon and enter a target pace to try other goals, such as 8:00 per mile for a sub-3:30 marathon.
How do I enter times?
Type 1:45:30 for 1 hour 45 minutes 30 seconds, 25:00 for 25 minutes, or just 25 for 25 minutes. For pace, type 8:30 for 8 minutes 30 seconds per mile (or per kilometer if you switched units).
